Emily Davies Student Accommodation  

Brief: ADL Contractors Ltd have been contracted to provide the Design Development; Supply; Installation & Commissioning of the mechanical & plumbing installations at Emily Davies Hall, Southampton. 
 
The areas of works are split between two distinct areas, each of which have differing scopes. Within the existing courtyard a new pavilion has been constructed providing break-out areas for the students and a new laundry. The existing accommodation refurbishment involves the general refresh of the existing accommodation with a number of additional bedrooms created via an infill extension. 
 
New pavilion scope of works consists of:-

Full Project Narrative 
 
Low Temperature Hot Water Heating 
The new pavilion is provided with a dedicated heating system serving underfloor heating installed to both levels. 
 
LTHW is generated via a roof mounted Mitsubishi Electric Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) with associated buffer vessel; pressurisation unit; expansion vessel & circulation pumps located within the first floor riser cupboard. 
 
Heating water is conveyed around the building through copper pipework complete with crimped fittings. All pipework is insulated with insulation and sealed to ensure a vapour barrier. 
 
 
Ventilation Systems 
Ventilation is limited to localised wall mounted extract fans providing a minimum air change rate to the WC areas. 
 
Air Conditioning Systems 
DX air conditioning is provided to the new ground floor gym within the infill extension. An internal fan coil unit is wall mounted within the gym sized to cater for the sensible cooling load. The associated condensing unit is located at ground level on the gym’s external wall. 
 
Cold Water Installation 
The pavilion cold water domestic services are provided via a combined cold water storage tank & booster set. 
 
The cold water storage tank provides approximately 100 litres of actual storage. 
 
The cold water booster set provides 0.803 litres/second @ 5 Bar, and is mounted directly to the tank. 
 
Cold water domestic services are conveyed around the building through copper pipework complete with crimped fittings. All pipework is insulated with insulation and sealed to ensure a vapour barrier. 
 
Within the existing refurbishment & infill extension the existing cold water services have been reconnected & extended as required. 
 
The new gym & office areas built within the infill areas have been provided with extended cold water supplies as detailed. 
 
Hot Water Installation 
The hot water domestic services are provided via local electric point of use water heaters. 
 
Hot water domestic services are conveyed around the building through copper pipework complete with crimped fittings. All pipework is insulated with insulation and sealed to ensure a vapour barrier. 
 
Within the existing refurbishment & infill extension the existing cold water services have been reconnected & extended as required. 
 
Above Ground Drainage 
Above ground drainage has been installed to remove waste away from the water points throughout the building. 
 
Traps are installed to all points to prevent odours spilling out from the wastes. 
 
Sanitaryware 
Sanitaryware has been supplied & installed in-line with the architectural requirements. 
 
Dry Riser Installation 
To comply with fire officer requirements the existing 4 no. blocks have each been provided with a retrofitted dry riser system. 
 
Each block has a dedicated inlet valve c/w enclosure located at ground floor level, with outlet valves at each level within the stair cores.
